True Worship

“Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the Lord our Maker; for he is our God and we are the people of his pasture, the flock under his care.” Psalm 95:6-7 (NIV)

Webster defines “worship” as 1) a prayer, church service, or other rite showing reverence for a deity; 2) intense love or admiration of any kind. Mankind was born with an inner desire to honor and reverence something superior to and more powerful than himself. For some, it was the sun, moon, or stars.

There are four stages of development set forth in the Bible regarding worship of the Creator, the perfect, holy God. The patriarchs built altars where the Lord appeared to them (Genesis 12:7-8). They followed organized worship in the Tabernacle with its complex ritual and system of sacrifice, as described in Exodus and Leviticus. The synagogue stage began during the Exile; and lastly came Christian worship, consisting of preaching (Acts 20:7), reading of Scripture (James 1:22), prayer (I Timothy 2:8), singing (Ephesians 5:19), baptism (Acts 2:41), the Lord’s Supper (I Corinthians 11:18-24), and almsgiving (I Corinthians 16:1-2).

As you bow before God today, remember He is Spirit and “…true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.” (John 4:23)

PRAY: “One and only God, how can I help but kneel before You in humble worship when I consider all Your hands have made. You are my Shepherd, Lord, and I am a sheep in Your pasture. Hallelujah! Amen.”
