Keep Your Word

“When a man makes a vow to the Lord or takes an oath to obligate himself by a pledge, he must not break his word but must do everything he said.” Numbers 30:2 (NIV)

How important is it to “keep your word” to the Lord? to your spouse? to your friends? to your employer? The psalmist says that those who will dwell in the Lord’s sanctuary and live on His holy hill will be among those who keep their oaths “even when it hurts!” (Psalm 15:4 (NIV))

You may live in a world of broken promises and lawlessness where people go into marriage without expecting it to last, sign contracts with “escape clauses,” and make promises that cannot possibly be kept; BUT, for God’s people, IT SHOULD NOT BE SO!

Moses’ law, in Deuteronomy 23:23(NIV), states:

“Whatever your lips utter you must be sure to do, because you made your vow freely to the Lord your God with your own mouth.”

Carefully weigh your words before they exit your mouth. If you agree to help a friend, do not change your mind at the last minute. If you signed a rental agreement, pay your rent by the due date. It is important to keep your word… to God and to others. Remember, He is keeping His word to you!

PRAY: “O Lord, forgive me for the promises that I have broken in the past and help me to value my word to others as I value Your Word to me.  For Jesus’ sake, amen.”
