Characteristics of Love #7 – Not Self Seeking

“…[love] is not self-seeking.” I Corinthians 13:5 (NIV)

One of the most gracious examples of unselfish love was demonstrated by Ruth in her relationship with Naomi, her mother-in-law. The entire story is recorded in the book of Ruth. When Ruth could have chosen to go her own way and seek her own happiness, instead she chose to stay with Naomi and lovingly care for her. “. . . Intreat me not to leave thee, or to return from following after thee: for whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God.” (Ruth 1:16)

These faithful words, that are often paraphrased in vows of the bride and groom in wedding ceremonies, are actually the words of a bride to her aged mother-in-law! Imagine that in today’s culture.

God honors this kind of self-denying love. Ruth was rewarded with a fruitful life and family. King David was her great-grandson and, from his lineage the Messiah, Jesus Christ, was born.

I Corinthians 10:24 (NIV) exhorts: “Nobody should seek his own good, but the good of others. “It also could be phrased in this way: Do (good) unto others and GOD will DO [GOOD] UNTO YOU! Practicing godly love brings good rewards.

“Loving God, You have given me a heart for others in that I can show forth Your love in this world. Help me to remain faithful in every good work.  In Jesus Name, amen.
