Characteristics of Love #5 – Not Arrogant or Proud

The Bible says love is not “puffed up,” meaning “proud.” Webster’s Dictionary defines “pride” as “an inordinate self-esteem.” The negative application of pride builds up oneself at the expense of others. It demands attention and praise. It is self-adulation.

God has very little patience with the sin of pride. It is one of the seven things He hates… “a proud look” (See Proverbs 6:17.) Satan was thrown out of heaven for the sin of pride and the desire for self-worship. James 4:6 says, “God resisteth the proud.”

So how do you avoid this dreadful earthly tendency of man? By practicing godly love, by deliberately preferring others over yourself, by humbling yourself, and by worshiping God alone. James 4:10 says, “Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.”

Be willing to admit that you may be wrong. Be quick to say, “I’m sorry.”“If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also.” (Matthew 5:39b, NIV)

Be willing to suffer without retaliation, and God will battle on your behalf.
