“Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.” Matthew 18:4
Jesus was asked by His disciples, “Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” (Matthew 18:1) He then went on to talk about the desirable qualities of a child to illustrate the definition of greatness.
1) A child has a quality of TRUST that God is looking for. (See Proverbs 3:5.) Disappointments in life can cause you to become hardened and untrusting, building up walls of pride and sin. You cannot properly love God or anyone else without trust.
2) A child is TEACHABLE. Pat Robertson of The 700 Club has said that a child between four and five years old will learn and absorb more than an adult student who is taking four years of college. God wants you to hunger for Him with an open, pliable mind, willing to be taught. (See Proverbs 2:1-10.)
3) A child is REAL (unpretentious). Little children are simply themselves, exposed in all their weaknesses and failures. God desires that you take off any masks, quit pretending, and just be real, looking to Him to help you with your inadequacies.
PRAY: “Abba, Father, as Your child, I want to be a jewel in Your kingdom, trusting, teachable, and real. Tear down any walls interfering with trust, open my eyes to see spiritual truths, and expose my secrets. I pray in Jesus’ Name. Amen.”
