“Endure hardship with us like a good soldier of Christ Jesus.” II Timothy 2:3 (NIV)
The Apostle Paul was exhorting young Timothy concerning the right heart attitudes necessary to be a good soldier. He:
1) Endures hardship – James 1:12 (NIV): “Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him.” Jeremiah 48:10 (NIV) goes so far as to say, “A curse on him who is lax in doing the Lord’s work! A curse on him who keeps his sword from bloodshed!”
2) Pleases God (his Commander) – Verse 4: “No one serving as a soldier gets involved in civilian affairs— he wants to please his commanding officer.”
3) Strives for mastery lawfully – Verse 5: “…he does not receive the victor’s crown unless he competes according to the rules.” Read Deuteronomy 28 to see what blessings are in store for following orders obediently and correctly.
4) Is interested in the spoils – Verse 6: “The hardworking farmer [soldier] should be the first to receive a share of the crops [spoils).” Jesus spoke of it this way:
“This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.” (John 15:8, NIV)
PRAY: “Commander-in-Chief, I am ready for my marching orders today. I want to be part of Your kingdom’s army bringing deliverance to the oppressed. In Jesus’ Name, amen.”
