The Roar of Pentecost
Pastor Phil Derstine 5-19-24 (Pentecost Sunday)
Day of Pentecost
- Acts 2:1 “And when the Day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. (2) And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. (3) And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. (4) And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.”
- Acts 1:4 (Jesus) "Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. (5) For John baptized with water, but in a few days, you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit."
Baptism in the Holy Spirit (and with Fire)
- Matthew 3:11 (John the Baptist) “I baptize you with water for repentance. But after me will come one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not fit to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.”
- Baptism (Gr: Baptizo) – To immerse (repeatedly), submerge, cleanse.
- Pickle metaphor – as a cucumber is “permanently altered,” dipped into boiling water and then left immersed in vinegar solution.
- Baptism in the Holy Spirit and Fire – a greater measure of God’s Spirit and Power in the inner man.
- Hebrews 12:29 “For our God is a consuming fire.” (Fire Metaphor)
- Fire: purifies gold (removes the impurities), tempers steel (makes it stronger), cauterizes wounds (to stop the bleeding and prevent infection).
What Changes does this Baptism bring? (Why do I need this?)
- Closer relationship with God
- John 15:26 “I will send you the Comforter…” (Gr: Parakletos) – helper, counselor, advocate, called along side to help.
- I Corinthians 14:2 “He that speaks in an unknown tongue speaks not unto men, but unto God: for no man understands him, but in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.” (4) He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself…” (Language of God)
- Romans 8:26 “The Spirit also helps our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.”
- Closer relationship with one another (believers)
- Acts 2:42-47 “They devoted themselves to the apostles teaching, to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer… all the believers were together… every day they continued to meet together in the temple… they broke bread in their homes and ate together… praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people.” (Example of a happy, positive, on-the-move, Spirit-filled church!)
- Closer relationship with people in need (the world)
- Acts 3 – Peter and John healed the crippled man who sat and begged at the temple gates.
- Acts 4:13 “When they saw the boldness of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled and ordinary men, they were astonished, and they took note that these men had been with Jesus.”
- Acts 1:8 “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses…”
Luke 4:18-19 (Jesus)“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor, he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight of the blind to set at liberty them that are bruised. To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.”
